Ethno & Archaeo-Astronomy
in Northern Chile
"The main project goal is to understand and characterize the different conceptualizations and logics that intervened in the construction of the (physical, social, and symbolic) space during the Inca and Early Colonial Period in Northern Chile. In particular, we aim at studying the social and cultural practices influenced by the observations of the sky among the Atacama indigenous groups."
Despite the very positive observations of both the committee and the external referee, the project was NOT approved due to the limited available funding for the year 2017.

From the 2017 referee's report:
“This project [...] opens an entirely new line of research in the country and can provide impressive multidisciplinary results. It is crucial that analytic tools that are used on a daily basis in astronomy can be applied to studies in other areas for the advance of human knowledge as a whole. [...] I have seen several projects look far from the mainstream in their early stages become examples for all of us of innovative thinking at the right time to achieve significant results. If this small team is given the opportunity by CONICYT, it could result in an inspiring, new, home-grown initiative from within Chile. It seems to me that this would be a good project to support to see what results from this innovative thinking.” |
We applied again in 2018. This time we were promptly disqualified because the project "no cumple con las bases del concurso".
We have finally applied to the ESO-Chile Comité Mixto Funding Program. The results have not been informed, yet (as of 2018/10/12).
